Why a call speaker needs a different approach
The small receiver above the screen is used for normal calls, while music and videos usually play through one or more loudspeakers near the bottom edge. Browser audio cannot reliably be forced through a specific internal speaker on every phone, so the routing test comes before any receiver-cleaning sequence.
If the test tone comes from the bottom, playing more tones will not clean the top receiver. In that case, focus on the receiver opening, call-volume settings, Bluetooth routing, a misaligned screen protector and an actual call test.
Common reasons calls sound quiet
The receiver slot can be partly covered by skin oil, makeup, pocket lint or an edge of a screen protector. The phone may also be routing calls to earbuds, a hearing device, a car or another Bluetooth accessory. Low call volume, accessibility settings, network quality and app-specific calling problems can sound similar to a blocked earpiece.
- Raise volume while a call is active; media volume and call volume may be separate.
- Test both a normal cellular call and a different calling app.
- Remove the case and inspect the top opening under bright light.
- Restart the phone before assuming the receiver hardware has failed.
How to clean the top earpiece safely
Power the phone off and unplug it. Use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to move across the receiver opening with light pressure. Hold the opening downward so loosened debris can fall away. Do not push a pin, needle, toothpick or metal tool through the mesh.
Avoid spraying liquid, cleaner or compressed air into the receiver. If the phone was wet, wipe the exterior with a soft lint-free cloth and allow airflow. Sound that remains badly distorted after drying and careful surface cleaning should be inspected by a qualified technician.
When the problem is probably not dirt
If every call is quiet but the receiver opening is clear, compare speakerphone mode and wired or wireless headphones. A normal speakerphone with a consistently weak earpiece points toward the receiver path. Intermittent sound, buzzing after a drop, liquid warnings, a swollen battery or a hot device are reasons to stop testing and arrange service.
