What sound can and cannot do to dust
A pulsed tone moves the speaker diaphragm and may shake loose a small amount of dry lint or dust sitting at the surface. It cannot vacuum debris out, dissolve skin oil or reach compacted material behind a protective mesh. Claims that a tone “deep cleans” every speaker are not realistic.
If the grille visibly looks blocked, careful physical cleaning is usually more relevant than repeating louder sounds. The goal is to lift debris away without puncturing mesh, pushing material deeper or introducing moisture.
A safer manual cleaning method
Turn the phone off and remove the case. Hold the speaker opening downward. With a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush, make light strokes across the grille rather than pressing into it. Work slowly and check progress under bright light. Avoid blowers or pressurised air unless the manufacturer of your exact phone explicitly allows them.
For oily residue around—not inside—the opening, use only the cleaning method approved for the phone’s exterior. Do not drip alcohol, water or cleaner into a speaker. Do not use adhesive putty unless the manufacturer explicitly recommends it, because material can remain in fine mesh.
Tools to avoid
Needles, SIM ejectors, pins, toothpicks and metal brushes can damage the grille or membrane. Compressed-air cans can force particles and moisture deeper. Vacuum nozzles can create uncontrolled suction and static. A toothbrush with hard or dirty bristles can scratch surfaces and transfer residue.
- No sharp picks through the grille.
- No liquid sprayed into an opening.
- No direct heat to soften dirt.
- No maximum-volume tone held against your ear.
When cleaning is unlikely to solve it
Buzzing that began after a drop, sound that cuts out when the phone moves, severe distortion at low volume or no output at all can indicate hardware damage. If the grille is clean and settings are correct, repeated brushing is more likely to cause harm than improvement.
