What a water-eject sound actually does
A speaker creates sound by moving a diaphragm. A controlled low-frequency pattern causes larger visible and audible movement than many high-frequency tones. That movement may encourage droplets sitting near the speaker opening to shift outward, especially when gravity is helping.
The sound does not reach every sealed area of a phone, prove that internal moisture is gone or prevent corrosion from contaminated liquid. Treat it as one step in a drying process rather than a waterproofing or repair feature.
What to do immediately after freshwater exposure
Remove the phone from water, unplug cables and gently wipe the exterior. This is especially relevant after rain or a monsoon splash, when moisture may sit near the grille even though the rest of the phone appears normal. Keep liquid away from the charging port and position the speaker and connector downward so gravity can assist drainage.
Run the sound only when the phone is stable, not hot and able to play audio normally. After the cycle, allow airflow. Speaker performance can remain muffled until moisture evaporates, so a quieter result immediately after one cycle does not automatically mean hardware failure.
Avoid methods that can make damage worse
Do not use a hair dryer, oven, heater or direct high heat. Do not insert cotton swabs or paper into the port, and do not blast compressed air into speaker or microphone openings. Rice can leave dust and fragments near ports and does not replace airflow or manufacturer instructions.
Salt water, pool chemicals, sugary drinks and other liquids are more serious than clean freshwater because residue can remain after evaporation. Follow the device manufacturer’s cleaning guidance and seek service if the phone shows charging warnings, restarts, overheats or loses functions.
How to judge whether it is improving
Use the same short audio clip at the same volume before and after drying. Listen for clearer speech, less bubbling, more stable bass and fewer sharp crackles. A gradual improvement over several hours is more reassuring than repeatedly running loud tones.
